Ackrill Media Business Awards

We are thrilled that we have been shortlisted in the Ackrill Media Business Awards in the category ‘Best Large Company’. The award will be presented at a ceremony on 15 March and we will have our fingers crossed until then!

Free Training in Volunteering Skills

During February and March we are able to offer a free 6 day taster course, funded by NLDC, to disabled adults in the basic principles of volunteering. The course will demonstrate the benefits of volunteering and how to use volunteering as an opportunity to develop skills for work.

The training can lead to the ASDAN accredited community volunteering qualification which can be completed after the taster if students wish to progress.

The sessions will cover: what is volunteering, finding a volunteering opportunity, career development, environmental awareness and volunteering at events.

Holiday lodge receives funding

Disability Action Yorkshire has received £1,500 funding from The Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation to support the purchase of accessible fixtures and fittings at our new Holiday Lodge.

Features will include tracked hoists, profiling beds, wet room and a kitchen with rise and fall units, hob and sink.

The site is at Kenwick Woods which has great facilities on site and is in a good situation for things to see and visit in the local area. For more information on the site visit www.kenwickwoods.com

Thank You to the Nidderdale Messiah!

We were thrilled to be presented with a cheque for £4,000 from John Hodgson, Chair of the Nidderdale Messiah. John came along to 34 Claro Road, our residential home, to present the cheque to Caroline, one of our service users, on 10 January. This was the proceeds from the magnificent Nidderdale Messiah held in November 2011 at Birstwith church.

This event is held annually and every year they choose a different charity to benefit from the proceeds. This year we were the lucky recipients, and we also got to hear the beautiful recital of Handels Messiah, which was breathtaking. The money received will go towards equipping our holiday lodge, the build of which is almost complete.

Our Head Office has now reopened after the winter break along with the Furniture Enterprise showroom.

Santa and his Elf collected over £100 at Darley Mill Santa’s Grotto.

Listening Line

Today we have launched our Listening Line. This is a dedicated phone line where users of our services, or those supporting them, can ring if they want to talk to someone confidentially about any of our services.

If callers are ringing about abuse or suspected abuse they will be directed to the relevant Safeguarding Team, if they feel unable to make that call themselves we will put the referral system immediately in place.

We hope that the Listening Line will assist those who do not feel able to, or to not wish to, raise their concerns directly with the service concerned.

The Listening Line is a freephone number and can be called at any time day or night.
